About

Gangwon Province Bandaji (Blanket Chest)

This exceptional Bandaji from Gangwon Province is a rare and remarkably well-preserved example of traditional Korean storage furniture. Entirely original and free from restoration, it retains its authentic surface, fittings, and rich patina acquired through more than 150 years of use.

Unlike the more common single-compartment Bandaji, this is a two-level chest. The upper section forms the principal storage compartment, accessed by the large drop-front door, while the lower section consists of a separate compartment fitted with three internal drawers, providing convenient storage for smaller personal belongings or valuables. This practical arrangement is seldom encountered and reflects the thoughtful design of furniture produced for prosperous rural households.

The chest displays many of the characteristics associated with Gangwon Province furniture. Constructed from thick red pine planks, it has a robust, architectural appearance emphasizing strength over ornamentation. The proportions are unusually tall and nearly square, giving the piece a commanding presence. The broad overhanging top protects the front from dust and moisture, while the open sled-like base elevates the chest above the floor, improving ventilation and protecting its contents from damp conditions common in the mountainous region.

The forged iron hardware is restrained yet powerful. Large butterfly-shaped hinges, simple corner straps, and hand-forged rosette nails provide both structural reinforcement and understated decoration. The substantial lock plate and hasp demonstrate the blacksmith's craftsmanship while remaining entirely functional. Unlike furniture from wealthier regions such as Gyeonggi or Kaesong, where bright brass fittings often dominate the façade, the dark iron fittings here harmonize with the chest's austere character.

The deep reddish-brown surface, developed through decades of handling and oxidation, beautifully reveals the texture of the wood and reflects the honest, utilitarian aesthetic for which Gangwon furniture is admired. Minor wear, tool marks, and age-related irregularities remain untouched, enhancing both its historical integrity and visual appeal.

Completely original examples of this quality are increasingly difficult to find. Combining exceptional state of preservation, unusual internal configuration, and the bold rustic character distinctive of Gangwon Province, this Bandaji represents an outstanding example of mid-19th-century Korean domestic furniture.
