Chinese Huanghuali Folding Horseshoe Chair (Jiaoyi 交椅) - Dark Zitan Wood

This elegant Huanghuali-style folding horseshoe chair, known traditionally as a Jiaoyi (交椅), reflects the refined ingenuity of classical Chinese furniture design. Distinguished by its gracefully arched horseshoe arms and cross-folding base, the Jiaoyi was historically a symbol of status, often reserved for scholars, officials, and military commanders due to its portability and ceremonial presence.

The back splat features openwork relief carving of auspicious motifs, including scrolling foliage and a mythical beast, symbolizing protection, prosperity, and longevity. Subtle brass mounts reinforce structural points while adding a quiet decorative contrast to the warm, richly grained hardwood. The folding structure is both functional and sculptural, demonstrating masterful joinery and balance.

A rare and highly decorative form, this chair serves as both a functional seat and a sculptural statement — ideal for collectors of Chinese antiques, curated interiors, or as a striking accent piece in contemporary settings.
