A bar stool does more work than it looks. It sets the mood of a kitchen island, a home bar or a quiet corner of an open-plan room. The right one depends on two things: your style and your space.
We believe the best seats have already lived a little. So here are 10 types of bar stools, each matched to a home style, with a real piece from our bar stool collection or our wider stools collection. Mix them, match them, or let one stand alone. Every type comes with an idea for how to pair it.

1. Wire Stool for Mid-Century and Modern Kitchens
Harry Bertoia turned welded steel rods into seating in 1952, and the wire stool has stayed a modern classic. Its open frame lets light pass through, so it never crowds a room. Try it with a chunky wooden island so the steel and the grain balance each other. Our Bertoia Barstool comes from our flea market. Best for mid-century and minimal homes.

2. Slim Teak Stool for Tight Counters
Backless stools tuck under the counter and take little visual room. Our Teak T Bar Stool (Slim) by Paya is brand new and made in Thailand, with a gently curved seat and a solid carved frame. Mix it with rattan stools in the same row for a two-material look. Best for Japandi and tropical homes.

3. Rosewood Stool for Home Bars
Paya's Rosewood T Bar Stool has a gently curved seat and a solid carved frame, with the visible grain doing most of the talking. It's brand new and made in Thailand, and its natural wood tone brings warmth to pale rooms. Pair it with brass lamps and a vintage sideboard for a moody bar corner, or set it beside the teak T stool above for a two-tone row. Best for warm modern homes with a home bar.

4. Carved Single-Block Stool for Organic and Rustic Homes
Monoxylous means carved from a single piece of wood. The look is sculptural, and the grain does the decorating. Set them against a smooth stone counter or a sleek metal pendant, and the contrast flatters both. Our Set of Four Ethiopian-Style Monoxylous Bar Stools is a full island's worth of seats. Best for rustic, earthy interiors.

5. Tribal-Style High Chair for Statement Corners
Our Senufo-Style High Chairs are a pair of high armchairs inspired by the tribal seating of the Senufo people of Ivory Coast, handcrafted in Thailand from jackwood with oak seat panels. Their bold, sculptural lines need little around them. Give the pair a corner of their own, or split them and slip one in among quieter stools as the happy odd one out.

6. Gold Metal Stool for Contemporary Spaces
A gold finish adds a bright note to dark cabinetry and stone counters. Our Ink Bar Stool in Gold from Masaya suits a polished, contemporary look. Soften the shine with rattan or teak nearby, so the room feels warm rather than showy. Best for contemporary dining areas and home bars.

7. Handcrafted High Stool for Design-Led Homes
SUMPHAT's Indigo Flow high stool comes from The Unrivalled Thai Craft, the 7th Anniversary Edition with ICON CRAFT, created by seven Thai designers in support of SACICT. An interlocking stainless steel frame in deep indigo meets a handwoven reed mat inlay, which adds warmth and texture. Let it stand alone beside quieter seating, and it reads like a sculpture you can sit on. Or set it against a wooden island, where the indigo and the grain play off each other. Best for design-led homes where the island is the centrepiece.

8. Woven Rope Stool for Relaxed Tropical Homes
Not every seat belongs at the counter. This stool and the next are lower seats, made for the space around your bar. Yothaka's Gasalong Macrame Stool has a wood frame with rattan accents, handwoven with macrame rope. Alternate it with wire stools for a mix of soft and sharp. Best for coastal and tropical homes and casual corners.

9. Low Rattan Stool: For Light, Natural Interiors
Paya's Stool Rattan Seat With Bamboo Legs is made by hill tribe artisans of Northern Thailand, with a handwoven herringbone rattan seat on a bamboo frame. Use it as an extra perch beside a natural wood counter, or as a plant stand. Best for small flats and breakfast nooks.

10. Brutalist Cowhide Bar Stool: For Bold, Lived-In Homes
Our Spanish Wooden Carved Brutalist Cowhide Bar Stool has a hand-carved wooden frame with a raw, textured finish and a real cowhide seat. It's vintage and in fair condition, with natural rust and wear that add to its story. Pair it with a smooth stone counter so the rough carving stands out, or set it between two sleeker stools as the odd one out. Best for brutalist, rustic, and eclectic homes.

Bar Stool Height Guide: Start With Your Counter
Check height before style. Measure from the floor to the underside of your counter or bar top. In the counter height vs bar height stools debate, counter-height stools usually have a seat around 61–66 cm (24–26 in). Bar-height stools sit higher, around 71–76 cm (28–30 in). Leave roughly 23–30 cm between the seat and the underside of the counter so knees fit. Guides differ by a few centimetres, so measure your own counter and check each listing's seat height.
